Jacksonville Sportsplex HVAC System Design
Design-Build project to convert the Jacksonville Ice & Sportsplex into the Community First Igloo. The new facility will serve as the headquarters and practice facility for the Jacksonville Icemen in addition to providing a variety of benefits to youth through program opportunities like hockey and figure skating, while still providing public skate lessons. The facility will include two (2) NHL/ECHL regulation-size ice rinks, a sports bar, a pro shop for hockey equipment, Icemen merch, an E-center sports arena, meeting rooms for corporate and private use, and the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame.
Sportsplex HVAC System Challenges
The primary HVAC system challenge of this project was the building’s cooling load required the use of units that were too large for the existing structure to support. Out team was tasked with developing a system that would meet the cooling load requirements and be supported by the existing structure.
We utilized our partnership with Atmos Air to provide bi-polar ionization, which is an acceptable method in ASHRAE 90.1, for reducing the outside air requirement for the building. By reducing the outside air up to 50% in some of the areas we were effectively able to downsize the rooftop units to a size that the existing structure could support.
